Melt-processable liquid crystalline terpolyesters for e.g. electronics prepared by acetylating 8-(3-hydroxyphenyl) octanoic acid and hydroquinone, polycondensation, post-polymerization and extraction

Melt-processable liquid crystalline terpolyesters (I) are prepared by acetylating 8-(3-hydroxyphenyl) octanoic acid and hydroquinone, acidolysis polycondensation to effect higher molecular weight formation, post-polymerizing and soxhlet extraction. Preparation of melt-processable liquid crystalline (LC) terpolyesters of formula (I) comprises (i) acetylating 8-(3-hydroxyphenyl) octanoic acid and hydroquinone using an acetylating agent; (ii) acidolysis polycondensation at 260-300 deg C for 6-24 hrs. under reduced pressure to remove acetic acid efficiently and effect higher molecular weight formation; (iii) post-polymerization at higher temperatures but below decomposition temperature for extended time; and (iv) purification by soxhlet extraction using solvent mixtures comprising acetone-alcohol or acetone-methylethyl ketone. R = Cl, C6H5, CH3O or CH3. An Independent claim is included for (A) the melt-processable LC terpolyesters (I).
