Aminostyrylanthracene compounds of the general formula [I] [wherein R<2> is unsubstituted aryl; R<1> is aryl which may be substituted with one or more members selected from among various groups; and R<3> to R<5> are each hydrogen, cyano, hydrocarbyl, or the like]. These compounds can be prepared by condensing the corresponding aminobenzaldehydes with the corresponding phosphonic esters or phosphonium salts.
