PURPOSE: To provide a paper sheets counting device which can decide the number of passed paper sheets in the various carrying pattern where overlapped feeding, a skew, a bend and a tear occur. CONSTITUTION: A paper sheets counting device counting paper sheets is provided with thickness detection means 31, 32 and 33 detecting the thickness of the paper sheets passing through a carrying route. The plural thickness detection means 31, 32 and 33 are individually installed on the carrying route. Waveform outputs from the plural detection means 31, 32 and 33, which are obtained by detecting the thickness of the prescribed parts of the paper sheets passing through the carrying route, are compared with waveform data which are previously stored in a storage means and the number of the paper sheets passing through the carrying route can be decided.
