A waveguide including a body having a first surface, a second surface having a longitudinal axis. At least one of the first and second surfaces, and preferably both surfaces, are configured to be non-parallel to the longitudinal axis. The body of the waveguide can be configured in an elliptical shape along the longitudinal axis, whereby a proximal portion of the waveguide device is symmetrical with a distal portion. The present invention also includes an optical transfer system having a light source and an elliptically configured waveguide device.
