A laser tracker (7) determines the actual position and orientation of a reference point (11) on the base plate (2) representing the point of a tool and measures the position of a second (12) on one of the adjustment devices (9), which adjusts the position of the base plate support legs (3), in spatial coordinates. From a comparison of these coordinates with corresponding theoretical coordinates calculated by a control programme the actual geometrical dimensions of the appliance (1) are derived using the Ljapunow Function.
