A non-adherent sterile compress having a flexible open net structure, the fibers of which are coated with a cohesive non-adherent gel which leaves the mesh open, and which comprises a matrix of a highly plasticized hydrophobic elastomer containing hydrophilic particles of a hydrocolloid, and a process for its preparation. The fibers are preferably of a non-stretchable non elastic hydrophobic material, polyethylene terephthalate being preferred. The hydrophobic elastomer is preferably a triblock S-EB-S or S-EP-S (polystyrene-polyethylene-butylene-polystyrene, or polystyrene-polyethylene-propylene-polystyrene) of high molecular weight, plasticized with a paraffin oil or a mixture of this with Vaseline(RTM), there being, per 100 parts of triblock elastomer, 1000-2000 parts of paraffin oil and 0-400 parts of Vaseline. The hydrophilic hydrocolloid particles are preferably of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or a propylene glycol alginate, the gel containing 3-20% of this. The gel may further contain active materials such as antiseptics, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. INDEPENDENT CLAIM covers a continuous process for the manufacture of these compresses in which a band of flexible open net material is immersed in a bath of the liquid gel, then passes through two cylinders of pre-determined separation which cool the coated band, and this is then cut, stored and sterilized to make individual compresses. |
