The arc welding machine uses coated rods (31) for the repair of railway rails and has a chassis (3) with a welding head having a arc generator (7) and a control (9) for the welding process. The chassis has at least two legs (11a,b) to engage a rail. The legs and the arc generator are aligned for automatic alignment f the machine along the rail (13) to be welded. The arc generator can move along at least two transverse axes (X, Y). The generator can be mounted on a support (25) with controls to regulate the height and angular position of the arc.
