Class 146(1) A binding element for a loose-leaf ring binder has pairs of one-piece half-rings which in closed position overlap each other, and are in surface contact with each other, and a pair of spine-forming members which when the element is closed provide it with a substantially flat back, the half rings in each pair being directly hinged to each other and all the rings on one side of the element being connected together by one of the two spine-forming members, the spine-forming members being spaced apart one on each side of the axis of the hinge. Each half-ring is of substantially U-shape, the curved end 16 forming one leg of the U, a straight arm 18 the other leg and a joining piece 20 at right angles to the arm 18 the base of the U. The extremities of the arms 18 of each pair of half-rings are pivoted together by a rivet 14. A spine-forming and connecting member 12 on each side of the binding element unites all the half-rings on that side, each half-ring being engaged in a set of three aligned slots 28, 30, 32 and retained there by a rod 34 which passes through the holes formed in the parts of the half-rings which project through the slots 28. The connecting members 12 are secured at 40 and 42 to two covers 36 and the spine 38 of the binder, the connections at 42 allowing the spine to move laterally to a small degree in relation to the members 12 when the half-rings are opened. To facilitate turning the leaves in use the half-rings may be moved relatively to each other to the position shown in Fig. 4, complete separation of the curved ends 16 being prevented by a catch 44 pivoted at 50 to one half-ring and having a downturned end 52 which engages an abutment 48 on the other half-ring. Depression of a finger-piece 46 on the catch raises the end 52 against a spring bias and allows complete separation of the curved ends 16. A catch 44 may be provided at each end of the binding element. The positions of the pairs of half-rings on the connecting members 12 may be, altered by mounting them in different slots 28, 30, 32. In a modification (Figs. 13, 14, not shown) a single rod replaces the several rivets 14 as a pivot for the half-rings, the pairs of half-rings being separated by distance pieces on the rod, and the catch 44 is replaced by a catch in the form of a further rod which acts on all the pairs of half-rings. Other arrangements of slots and lugs whereby the half-rings are fastened to the members 12 are described. The half-rings and connecting members may be made of mild sheet steel or of a moulded plastic. |
