PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording element having a fast ink drying time, imparting good image quality and improved in gloss. SOLUTION: A ink jet recording element is constituted by providing an image receiving layer containing inorganic anionic pigment, an organic anionic binder and an organic cationic mordant on a support and providing a porous overcoat layer on the image receiving layer. The porous overcoat layer contains inorganic pigment and the organic anionic binder and the refractive index of the inorganic pigment in the overcoat layer is smaller than that of the inorganic anionic pigment in the image receiving layer by at least a 0.05 refractive index unit.
