PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing nickel hypophosphite hexahydrate as an inexpensive and high-purity product under a pollution-free state useful as a reducing agent and a nickel source in an electroless nickel plating. SOLUTION: Hypophosphorous acid is reacted with a basic nickel salt in a water phase, hypophosphorous acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or sulfuric acid is previously added to the reaction system so that the pH value of the reaction mixture after the reaction is <=3 and the filtrate is recycled to attain improvement in yield and non-pollution of the process.
