A safety light system for use with a boat incorporates a rearwardly directed warning light, preferably amber in colour, actuated by manual switch means, or by sudden loss of motive power, or by closing of the throttle at a predetermined high rate to effect a rapid reduction in boat speed. The light may be steady in nature or a flashing light such as a stroboscopic type light, and fitted to the boat or to the motor, to illuminate to the rear quarter.
