In an electronic commerce system a point of sale device on receiving a customer transaction order initiates the programming of the device with a permission code. The permission code is specific to a customer location. At least some of the capabilities of the apparatus are then inhibited until and unless a corresponding permission code is supplied to the customer apparatus when installed at the customer location.
