A system and method for managing inventory and sales using a wireless computer comprises an inventory management system that is web-enabled and that contains identification of inventory items for a whole distribution area. The inventory management system is configured to receive wireless communications and to transmit wireless communications. A wireless computer is configured to transmit inventory item search information to the inventory management system to determine if an inventory item is present in the inventory within a distribution area. The wireless computer is configured to receive confirmation from the inventory management system that the inventory item is present in the inventory and to operate as a wireless point of sale device to initiate the sale of the inventory item to a customer. The wireless computer is configured to enter payment information, such as from a credit card, and to transmit the payment information to the inventory management system. Upon receipt of the payment information from the wireless computer, the inventory management system will initiate delivery of the inventory item to the customer. Because the present invention enables a user to locate inventory in a distribution area and to process a sale of the inventory, and to do so quickly and in a mobile environment, customer disappointment associated with not being able to purchase the desired inventory is eliminated. In addition, a potential lost sale opportunity is converted to a sale of the inventory. |
