PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, a copying machine, an image read control method and a storage medium that can reduce first copy time, by sensing the size of a placed original and quickly placing a read means to a position for shading correction by the time an operator depresses a copy start button, in the case of reading the original by using an ADF or the original placed on an original platen glass pane. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a read means 1, with that an original is irradiated and guides an optical image to a photoelectric conversion means 2, which converts the optical image into an electric signal, an opening/closing detection means 3 that detects the opening/closing of an ADF 70, and a control means 5, that places the read means 1 to an original size sensing position, when it detects that the ADF 70 is open or places the read means 1 to a shading correction position, when it detects that the ADF 70 is closed.
