PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use a recording medium in the case of recording video for a long period. SOLUTION: When the time for starting reserved video recording comes in the case of recording video for a long period by using a recording pattern where picture quality information is set to each time zone, a picture quality corresponding to the present time in the recording pattern set to a reservation setting memory is selected and a data transfer rate corresponding to information on the selected picture quality is set to an encoding part. Then, video recording operation is performed based on selected picture quality information (S101 to S104). Furthermore, a category code indicating the kind of a program is detected from a received reception signal and video recording is performed at a data transferring rate corresponding to the category code. Thus, a data transfer rate corresponding to the kind of the program is selected automatically to perform video recording by desired data transfer.
