PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image-forming device that can accurately detect the width of an original, irrespective of the condition of paper such as flatness or thickness of the paper of the original or the like, when an original reader detects the width of the original. SOLUTION: An identification pattern, consisting of gray color lines, is provided to both ends of a white member placed opposite to a contact image sensor CIS, and it is judged whether the identification pattern can be identified (S1-S8) by using threshold stored in a table. When the identification pattern can be identified even once, an original with an A4 width is read (S9). When the identification pattern cannot be identified even when the threshold becomes A0H, an original with a B4 width is read (S10).
