PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine translation device, which makes an index file for retrieval preparable concerning both first and second languages when translating a sentence in the first language to a sentence in the second language, can look through the words in the sentence in the first language and translated words thereof and the contrast relation of words in the first language and can clearly grasp the translated words in the second language. SOLUTION: When translating the Japanese sentence inputted from an input device 20 to an English sentence through a translation program and a translation dictionary 51 stored in a translation part 62, the index file for retrieval is prepared by a file preparing part 63 concerning both the Japanese and English sentences, and words in the Japanese sentence and translated words in English thereof are simultaneously displayed on the index for retrieval. When it is instructed on a menu picture to change the translated word of a prescribed word in the Japanese sentence, the Japanese sentence, in which that instructed prescribed word exists, is retrieved by a file retrieving part 64 on the basis of the index file for retrieval and afterwards, the translated word of that retrieved prescribed word is translated into change-instructed translated word.
