PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate whether or not the signals of a moving image such as movie or the signals of a natural image such as a photograph, based on video signals and also to automatically set display quality based on the discriminated signal. SOLUTION: A pulse generating circuit 1 receives a specific bit of video signals 1 and outputs a pulse every time its logical inverse occurs. A counter 3 counts the number of the pulses in a horizontal synchronization signal interval. A comparator 4 compares the counted value of the counter 3 and a prescribed set value and controls a picture quality adjusting circuit 5 based on the comparison result. A natural image has a large amount of halftone compared with video signals such as a personal computer and the changing frequency of the video signals for a constant time is high. Thus, a natural image is identified from the image having a small amount of changes such as the output of a personal computer and automatic picture quality adjustment is made possible by the adjustment and the setting of display picture quality based on the identification result.
