PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that the items in a portable terminal, such as the portable telephone and PHS are hard to be selected, because a plurality of menus each containing a plurality of items exists and, as the number of items increases, the hierarchy becomes deeper and both discrimination and selection are required each time. SOLUTION: The key operator of the portable terminal divides a plurality of items displayed on the display section of the portable terminal into groups by freely selecting the items and, at the same time, assigns corresponding keys to the groups so that the operator may select an item to be displayed by successively moving a cursor to the item in the group containing the item by operating the key.
