PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character display device in which appropriate display control is always conducted in accordance with the number of characters and the contents and type of character data. SOLUTION: The character display device is provided with a reproducing section 2 which reads character data from an optical disk 1, a microprocessor (MPU) 3 which receives the character data from the section 2, detects control codes such as a line feed code and character codes and converts them into character display codes, a memory 4 which stores the character display codes outputted from the MPU 3, a memory control section 7 which controls data writing to and data reading from the memory 4, a display signal generating section 9 which reads character display codes from the memory 4 through the memory control section 7 and converts the read codes into prescribed display signals and a display section 10 which conducts displaying on the basis of the display signals from the section 10. The MPU 3 computes a maximum number of characters in one line and the number of lines from the character data and determines the display position in a display region of the section 10 on the basis of the computational results.
