PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for realizing a lithium secondary battery for preventing an electrode from being destroyed by powderizing and obtaining with a large discharging capacity, excellent in safety and cycle characteristics as well as a lithium secondary battery using the negative electrode material. SOLUTION: This negative electrode material for the lithium secondary battery is composed of particle uncleis of a composite compound with silicon as a main ingredient and elements other than silicon as additives, and a carbon layer coating the surface of the above particle uncleis.
