PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exclude useless processing of auto negotiation in a line gathering equipment (hub) used in structuring of such networks as Ethernet (R) LAN and the like, and at the same time reduce troublesome manpower works in the case of unsuccessful processing of auto negotiation on the other hand. SOLUTION: The power ON/OFF of a computer is monitored (step S1), the processing of auto negotiation is executed to the computer on the power ON of the computer (step S2), and the transmitting system with the computer is switched over from the high speed side to the low speed side in order in the case of unsuccessful processing of this auto negotiation (step S3-S6). By means of these, unless the computer power gets to ON, the line gathering equipment does not begin processing of auto negotiation to the computer. On the other hand, even in the case of unsuccessful processing of auto negotiation due to some causes, a common transmission system is to be found by appropriate switchover of the transmission system.
