PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for a cathode of a discharge lamp that prevents conceivably a disconnection of a chip under a thermal expansion and shrinkage, as well as having less tinker of radiation with a longer shelf life as for the discharge lamp. SOLUTION: After inserting a chip 3 into a concave portion 2 of a cathode body 1 and heating the cathode body 1 and the inserted chip 3 up to a given temperature in an atmosphere of a non-active gas, in the said atmosphere a pair of roller 7 and 7 is applied to role in a way that a certain region exceeding from the tip of the cathode body 1 and the bottom of the tip is gradually rolled off. Through this process, the tip portion of the cathode body 1 is adjusted into a long form of truncated cone and the pillar portion of the chip 3 into a conical form. Thereafter, both tips of the cathode body 1 and the chip 3 are allowed to sharply cut and processed.
