PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document retrieval device suitable for displaying messages in response to retrieval input and retrieval result so as to provide advantageous information about the retrieval. SOLUTION: A document storage part 202 is a document database storing documents of retrieval object, a word index part 203 stores words contained in the documents stored in the document storage part 202, a character string input reception part 204 receives character strings representing retrieval keyword which a user enters, a collation part 205 investigates whether or not the retrieval keyword inputted by the user is stored in the keyword index part 203, a collation result display part 206 displays the collation result obtained by the collation part 205, an inquiry part 207, after showing this collation result, makes an inquiry of the user about whether or not a retrieval is to be started, and a retrieval part 208, in the case that the retrieval is to be started as the result of inquiring of the user, retrieves, within the documents stored in the document storage part 202, documents in which the character string accepted as the retrieval keyword occurs.
