PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium showing high C/N in high density magnetic recording (especially using a MR head for reproducing). SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium formed by providing a lower layer including a non-magnetic powder and a bonding agent on a non-magnetic flexible substrate and by providing a magnetic layer including a ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent on the lower layer is characterized in the following. The magnetic layer has 0.01-0.1μm average thickness d and the ferromagnetic powder included in the magnetic layer is an acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder having <=0.1μm average major axis length and <=120 A.m2/kg (120 emu/g) inσs. And the non-magnetic powder included in the lower layer is an acicular inorganic powder having <=0.15μm average major axis length and the acicular ratio of the ferromagnetic powder is equal to or lower than the acicular ratio of the acicular inorganic powder.
