The aim of the invention is to simplify the adaptation of a temporally fluctuating polarisation to a predetermined polarisation state. A device for converting the polarisation of light is provided. Said device can be produced in a cost-effective manner and can be operated very simply. The inventive device is provided with an input (E) for receiving light having any polarisation PE and an output (A) for emitting light having a predetermined polarisation PA. A device (polarising beam splitter, PBS) divides the received light into differently polarised light portions. One of the light portions passes through a device (prisms P1 and P2) for adjusting the polarisation. The light portions are coupled again in a device (polarisation-maintaining interference coupler C). The coupling can be adjusted in such a way that said coupling has a maximal output intensity for emitting light and said light having a predetermined polarisation PA can be emitted on the output (A). Only one physical parameter in the form of the coupling of the light portions has thus to be controlled for optimising the inventive device.
