Chromatographic column consists of a hollow cylinder (1) having an inner diameter of at least 200 mm and a length of at least 300 mm and containing packing (10) in one section and filled with eluant as pressure medium in the other section. Both sections are separated by a piston (8) and a feed (12, 13) for the eluant is injected through the piston. The exit of the piston is formed by an element which divides the stream of eluant into a number of smaller partial streams. Preferred Features: The element is a sieve or filter material supported by a sieving plate.
