A minimum number of points corresponding to machine positions with respect to a reference body are formed in the coordinate system of the sensor, after which the individual coordinates of these points are determined. A transformation regulation for determining each of the points in a three-dimensional coordinate system is then formulated. The formulated regulation is then used to correlate the points in the sensor coordinate system with the points obtained in the three-dimensional coordinate system such that each detecting point of the sensor corresponds to an equivalent three-dimensional measuring coordinates.
