The optical system comprises a first lambda /4 plate (103), a lens element (107), a semi-transmissive mirror (105), a second lambda /4 plate (109) and a polarization-dependent mirror (111), arranged, in this order, from the incident side for projecting an image to be formed by the image display device on a user's retina.
