Reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides during combustion of cement clinker in a rotating furnace comprises minimizing the formation of nitrogen oxides in the region of the burner flame and the sintering zone by adjusting the furnace atmosphere containing carbon monoxide; and oxidizing the ferrite phase of the calcined clinker in the high temperature cooling zone of the clinker cooler connected to the rotating furnace with an oxidant added to the cooling air. Preferred Features: The waste gases containing carbon monoxide are utilized in the region of the secondary firing device of the calciner.
