A transfer device picks up cut web segments (20), and orients them into position and releases them onto a moving support (43, 60). A method for forming a cross-direction fibre tow, comprises providing a fibrous web (10), preferably a continuous length direction fibre tow, forming segments from this web, preferably by cutting, and placing the segments on a continuously moving support so that the former length edges of the fibrous web are in contact with each other. A transfer device picks up the segment and holds it firmly via surface pressure and then after orienting it in the correct position, drops it onto the support. The transfer device moves with the support during the release of the segment onto it. An Independent claim is also included for the production apparatus. |
