The brake has a main cylinder with a main piston moved forward in response to brake pedal operation to apply brake pressure to wheel cylinders, a power chamber, a reaction piston for transferring a power chamber pressure reaction force to the brake pedal, a power source for applying pressure to brake fluid in a reservoir, a return line with valves controled depending on brake pedal operation to reduce the brake fluid in the power chamber. The brake has wheel brake cylinders for the vehicle wheels, a main cylinder (MC) for forward movement of a main piston (MP) in response to operation of the brake pedal to apply a hydraulic brake pressure to the wheel brake cylinders, a power chamber (R3) behind the main piston, a reaction piston (PP) whose forward region lies freely in the power chamber to transfer a reaction force to the brake pedal (BP) generated by the power chamber pressure, a power source (PS) for applying pressure to brake fluid in a reservoir (RS) to apply a power pressure to the power chamber, a return line from the power chamber to the reservoir with valves (V1,V2), devices for detecting the degree of brake pedal operation and control devices (ECU) for controling the valves depending on brake pedal operation to reduce the amount of brake fluid in the power chamber.
