The switching device operating method has a switch pulse (A) supplied to a switching drive (12), for operation of switch sets (6), each provided with a switch contact (8) and connected to a respective line (L1-L3) of the supply network, with measurement of the current characteristic for at least one of these lines, for determining the optimum switching point. Different switching points are used for different switching operations, for providing a uniform loading of the switch contacts. An Independent claim for a switching device is also included.
