The AC converter circuit has an AC switch which is switched on at the zero point of an alternating voltage, and switched off at arbitrary time in each half-wave interval. The AC converter circuit has an AC switch, a DC switch-diode combination, another DC switch-diode combination and a control unit. The AC switch is switched on at the zero point of the alternating voltage, and effects the current flow through the load. The switch is switched off at an arbitrary time in each half-wave interval. The DC switch and diode combination is in parallel with the load. This is such that only during a positive half wave of alternating voltage, can the reactive current flow freely, when the AC switch is switched off and before at the zero crossing point of the alternating voltage. At the same time, the AC switch and the DC switch-diode combination are switched on.
