The method involves detecting the pressure-related deformation of a valve body for at least one cylinder with closed valves during operation and producing a corresponding signal. The deformation of the valve shaft can be detected for a poppet valve with a valve shaft connected to a valve drive. Deformation is detected by measuring the relative displacement of an emitter connected to the valve shaft with respect to a fixed sensor.
