A reel 10 comprises a cable receiving surface 11 having defined thereon at least one nip 19/21/22 in which a cable is securable relative to the cable receiving surface. The cable receiving surface may be generally cylindrical and the at least one nip may be provided by a plurality of projections therefrom. There may be three pairs of nips defined by mutually juxtaposed pairs of projections from the cable receiving surface. At least one surface of each pair may include a protuberance projecting therefrom towards the other projection (fig 3 - not shown). The cable receiving surface may comprise a helical groove 28, the coils of which maybe spaced apart adjacent to each projection to form a land. One end face of the reel 32 may comprise a recess 33 for receiving a cable-end with a ferrule secured thereto, a channel 34 being provided to interconnect the recess and the cable receiving surface. The channel may comprise a pair of mutually juxtaposed side surfaces, at least one of which may be provided with further protuberances 36/37 forming another nip to secure the cale relative to the channel. The reel may be constructed from a resiliently deformable material. In use, the reel may be used in a garage door gear of the kind known as a canopy door. |
