PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanically protected automatic transmission in the synchronizing control of the main gears to enable the main gears to be meshed in after stopping the revolution of a dog gear when the vehicle is stopping. SOLUTION: In the automatic transmission of the main gears having no mechanical synchronizer a control means can carry out the predetermined main gear synchronizing control and judge weather able to mesh in the gear or not comparing the revolution difference between a dog gear and a sleeve with predetermined gear in allowance. The controller alters the gear mesh in allowable value to the value nearer to zero when the vehicle is running at zero speed e.g. the controller alters the map value to the smaller value such as 10 (rpm) from the initial value for all the target main gear stages and the dog gear revolution is stopped by applying a countershaft brake control if the revolution difference is bigger than this.
