摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion optical device which is light in weight, without the risk of breakage which can realize the improvement in polarization accuracy and can moreover realize cost reduction, and to provide a projection type display device using the same. SOLUTION: The illuminating light, which is emitted from a light source 101 and becomes a nearly parallel luminous flux in a condensing mirror 102 is separated into an S-polarized light and a P-polarized light in a polarization separation part 103, consisting of a reflection type polarizing plate 103A and a reflecting mirror 103B, and image-formation (indistinct) of a segmenting image is performed to a different region near the focal length of a first MLA 104A, by keeping angle difference 2θbetween the separated S-polarized light and separated P-polarized light, and caused to be incident on the first MLA 104A of an integrator optical system 104. These segmenting images are made incident on a polarization conversion part 105 via a second MLA 104B, the P-polarized light is rotated by 90 degrees and converted into the S-polarized light, only the S-polarized light is made incident on a condensing lens 106 and a liquid crystal panel 200 which is a lighting area is made to condense.
