PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which can make the image quality higher and the size smaller while assuring the beam- condensing efficiency. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a three primary color illumination means 307 which makes incident main rays of three primary colors, red, green and blue, on a light valve at different angles and the light valve 315 which consists of many pixels capable of modulating incident light independently to input signals made to meet the three primary colors. The incident side of the light valve 315 is provided with a first lens array 311 and second lens array 313 which converge the angles of the main rays of the respective color light rays from the three primary color illumination means 307 so as to approximate the same to parallel or the incident side of the light valve 315 and introduce the main rays to the pixels on the light valve 315.
