PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that can adjust a backlash of gear engagement area with less numbers of measurement points, in an engine having a balance shaft of gear-driven type. SOLUTION: In the engine having (1) the balance shaft 14 upon a rotating shaft of which a primary and a secondary weight sections are mounted with a 180 deg. offset of phase, and (2) a power transmission means including a drive gear 1c on a crank shaft 1 side and a driven gear 14e set up between the primary and the secondary weight sections in the balance shaft 14, the method of adjustment comprising: a first step of measuring the amount of backlash between the gears of 1c and 14e at the most decelerated point in terms of speed for each cylinder of the crank shaft; a second step of selecting the minimum value of these backlashes; and a third step of adjusting the state of engagement of the both gears of 1c and 14e at the minimum amount of backlash.
