Alumina is added to the combined anode/electrolyte in a metal-alkaline battery cell such as a zinc-air battery. The resulting battery cell exhibits improved energy capacity. Preferably, the alumina is added in a concentration of about 1 % by weight. When a low viscosity diluent is added, the resulting battery cell exhibits an improved discharge voltage, particularly at low temperatures. Preferably, the diluent is added in a concentration of about 5 % by weight. Examples of suitable diluents includes isopropanel, isobutanol, secbutanol, and long chain and branched alcohols. |
