A lead-acid accumulator which can be stored in the dry charged state has a negative plate in which the particles of reduced lead are protected against oxidation by a coating of a lead soap. The coating may be made by mixing a fatty acid with the lead oxide and sulphuric acid with which the negative electrode is pasted. The fatty acid may have a melting-point below or above the temperature which the mixture attains; if it is above, the acid may be mixed as an aqueous emulsion with the lead oxide and sulphuric acid. After the electrode has been formed electrolytically the particles of reduced lead remain coated with the soap formed by the reaction of the lead oxide with the fatty acid. The fatty acid preferably contains at least ten carbon atoms and may be saturated or unsaturated, for example stearic, palmitic or oleic acid. Substituted fatty acids may also be used, for example hydroxystearic acid and ricinoleic acids. The quantity of acid used is from 0.02 to 0.25% of the weight of the lead oxide. The negative plate is inserted in a cell with a conventional positive plate, and when required for use the cell is filled with sulphuric acid of 35% concentration which decomposes the lead soap on the negative plate. |
