The cross rail (1) includes a stirrup (2) with two plates (21,22) both welded to the cross rail and separated by spacers (23). The stirrup presents on face which is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the rail. The steering column support plate (3), to which the column is attached, is screwed on to the stirrup on this face. Two projecting pegs (31,32) on the support plate (3) are inserted in a slot (24) which is formed in one of the plates (21) forming the stirrup. A cross rail (1) is provided to support the steering column (4) of a vehicle.
