PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high capacity roll excellent in wear resistance and surface roughening resistance in rolling, particularly, in hot and cold rolling for steel. SOLUTION: This roll material for rolling is composed of the material having a composition containing, by mass, 1.0 to 3.5% C, 0.2 to 2.0% Si, 0.2 to 2.0% Mn, 3.0 to 10.0% Cr, 3.0 to 8.0% V, 0.5 to 5.0% Nb and Mo and W of 1.0 to 8.0% in both cases, also satisfying the inequalities (1), V%+1.5Nb%<=-2.5C%+15.0% and (2), V%+0.55Nb%<=4.3C%-2.0% and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
