PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion control method for a direct injection type internal combustion engine, for shortening the activation time of a catalyst while reducing the discharge amount of unburnt HC in starting of the direct injection type internal combustion engine and having the small discharge amount of unburnt HC even in an operation period between cranking and the time when combustion control for activating the catalyst is performed. SOLUTION: This direct injection type internal combustion engine is provided with a fuel injection valve for directly injecting fuel into a cylinder, and a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas in an exhaust pipe. The engine has at least two kinds of combustion control patterns for activating earlier the catalyst, and the combustion control patterns are switched on the basis of the catalyst temperature. Stratified charge combustion is realized from the start by optimizing a structure of the direct injection type internal combustion engine.
