PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition that can give a coating composition capable of forming a coating film having a surface excellent in staining resistance, weathering resistance, and water resistance and also in image sharpness and to obtain an image sharpening agent for a water-based coating material. SOLUTION: Provided is a composition for a coating material, that constitutes a water-based coating material, which composition contains (A) an emulsion containing a silyl-containing polymer, (B) a silicon compound and/or a partial hydrolyzate thereof, and (C) an acidic organic compound (component C-1) and a basic compound (component C-2), wherein the acid/base equivalent ratio of component C-1 to component C-2 is in the range of 1/0.01 to 1/3.
