PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely cope with traffic regulation information of a bar at a railroad crossing or a signal at an intersection, in an automatic stop system for an engine of a vehicle, provided with a means for automatically stopping the engine in the idling state when a specified stop condition is established. SOLUTION: This automatic start/stop system for an engine is provided with a means (a step 1 shown in the figure 1) for catching traffic regulation information of a bar at a railroad crossing or a signal at an intersection, and a means (a step 3 in the figure 2) for finding the waiting time from the vehicle stop time to the regulation release from the information and for canceling the automatic stop of the engine when the waiting time is a short time not more than a specified value. The device is further provided with a means (a step 4 in the figure 3) for finding the waiting time before the regulation for stopping the vehicle is released and for automatically starting the automatically stopped engine when the rest of the waiting time becomes less than a specified time.
