A two state circuit comprises a tunnel diode D1, a non-linear impedance R (e.g. a backward diode), a constant voltage bias source in series with the tunnel diode D1 and the impedance R having a value such that a constant current region of the impedance R intersects a positive resistance region of the tunnel diode at a normal operating point and a low resistance region intersects the negative resistance region or the other positive resistance region, means 8, 9 for applying a pulse signal to a point on the circuit between the tunnel diode D1 and the non-linear impedance R, to switch the state of the diode, and means 16, for deriving an output from the same point. The tunnel diode is initially biased to a point in its low voltage region by a constant current source I s and application of input pulses at 8, 9 switch the operating point of the diode to the point where the low resistance region of the backward diode R intersects the tunnel diode characteristic. Either bi-stable or monostable operation may be obtained depending on the point of intersection. In a first modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the non-linear impedance comprises a pair of backward diodes. In a second modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the polarities of the backward diode and bias source V b are reversed. In a third modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the constant current bias I s and the voltage bias V b are provided by the same source. The inductive load L may be the effective inductance of the circuit wirings.
