PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, in which high brightness and a wide color reproducing range can be obtained, without causing increase in cost and power consumption. SOLUTION: The twisted nematic liquid crystal display device has a pair of transparent substrates subjected to alignment treatment, a twisted nematic liquid crystal layer held between the pair of transparent substrates, a pair of polarizing plates disposed outside of the pair of transparent substrates and disposed in the optical arrangement with the polarizing planes being almost perpendicular to each other, a color filter array disposed on at least one of the pair of transparent substrates, and an array of active matrix elements arranged on at least one of the transparent substrates. In the device, retardation in the liquid crystal cell is controlled to different values for each of the colors in the color layer. |
