PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material folding method which can fold even a sheet material of large size into a small shape, and a cushioning material filling apparatus using the method. SOLUTION: A cushioning material 10 is folded to about one half of the longitudinal dimension by pressing the sheet-like cushioning material 10 to the position of intersection of a first filling cylinder 1 with a second filling cylinder 2 by a first inserting member 4, and then, the cushioning material 10 is further folded into about one half of the first folded length by pressing the cushioning material 10 to the position of intersection of the second filling cylinder 2 with a third filling cylinder 3 by a second inserting member 5, The cushioning material 10 is still further folded to about one half of the second folded length by pressing the cushioning material 10 to the other end side of the third filling cylinder 3 by a third inserting member 6, and pressed out from the other end side of the third filling cylinder 3 and filled in the container 11.
